Network Engineer
Primary responsibility is to provide global voice and data network planning, design, analysis, small to medium sized project management, implementation and monitoring to ensure enterprise network resources maintain the highest level of reliability, availability, security, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Responsibilities: Aid in capacity and design planning at the strategic (enterprise) and tactical (site) level using factors including: Consolidated and secured ingress/egress public and private network access points. Quality of Service/Differentiated Service Policies Ongoing changes in service levels (e.g. site availability and differentiated services). New and emerging access methods and technologies. Emerging and existing security threats. Stay current with and evaluate voice and data network vendor product and service offerings. Design, implement, support and maintain internet infrastructure for the enterprise, including BGP routing in a multi-homed environment. Engineers and implements IP voice, video and data solutions that provide excellent access, throughput, availability, security and cost-effectiveness, while maintaining simplicity and industry best practices. Create, manage and maintain project plans and minimize service disruptions during deployments. Provide ‘on the ground’ technical expertise across the enterprise during implementation including resource allocation, scheduling, and technical integration. Participate in developing LAN, WAN, Telephony and network security common architectures and standards. Monitor, test, and troubleshoot existing LAN and WAN connectivity. Identify performance problems and trends; determine root cause, and escalate to appropriate internal teams and external partners. Interface with other global team members specific to network problems, technical concerns, and financial issues. Maintain excellent team relationships with all areas of the IT infrastructure along with service and equipment vendors. Report, track, and document all network related problems. Maintain network topology, circuit and equipment inventories and location databases. Track equipment lifecycles and recommend replacements as necessary. Ensure preventative maintenance is performed on a timely basis as specified. Develop disaster recovery plans to protect and recover St Jude Medical networks; participate in disaster recovery testing. Provide 24x7 on-call support as part of rotating team coverage. Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent is desired. Cisco CCNA or higher certification is required. 5+ years experience in network communications, design, implementation, and support. Excellent knowledge of voice and data communications, equipment, industry services, protocols, and terminology. Proficient with network traffic analyzers, network management, and modeling/analysis tools. Proven experience managing projects with a team of diverse contributors. Experience with international carriers, legacy voice, voice over IP, ATM, client and site-to-site VPNs, firewalls, and MPLS carrier services. Self motivated with excellent planning, interpersonal, organizational, documentation, verbal and written communication skills. Experience with WAN and Internet technologies and vendors, Cisco Systems routing and switching equipment, Cisco Systems Unified Communications products, various firewall platforms, Web-filtering,, Nortel, NEC, Siemens and Octel. Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Ability to work effectively in a fast paced changing environment -- multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Domestic and International travel may be required.
