Sr. Director, Product Development
Summary
This function provides guidance for the product concept, development and transfer functions with the intent to maximize revenue, profits, market coverage and other business-defined goals through optimization of applied resources and execution of the development plan(s).
Scope
Directly manages teams of any size and global in scope. Annual expense budget impact up to $10M, revenue budget impact multiple millions $USD. Direct the activities of engineers, scientists, managers, directors, project managers, administrative support and outside contractors.
Contacts / Interfaces
Contacts include senior management within the company and, contacts with technicians, physicians, administrators in the global healthcare marketplace. Secondary contacts include industry and trade representatives at all functional levels.
• Plan for and guide a major product or product line from concept/definition phase through development and commercialization, enhancement, and eventual retirement. Support the creation of business and product development plans.
• Align technology roadmap with business and project needs. Drive for the timely completion of world-class products that meet or exceed requirements.
• Continually monitor and improve product development and compliance processes. Stay abreast of contemporary trends in product development technology.
• Develop, monitor and forecast operating and project budgets.
• Conduct schedule and technical risk mitigation activities. Integrate these activities with appropriate project plans.
• Maximize efforts spent in support of new and growth products. Develop and support initiatives to reduce sustaining costs.
• Provide key input to the project cost – time to market – product cost – quality equation.
• Develop/Maintain Key Customer and Industry Relationships - Handle key customers, provide non-released systems for congresses, conduct special congresses and exhibitions. Setup and maintain global reference sites, both externally and internally. These relationships provide a conduit for the receipt of feedback and to provide a test market for ideas and products.
• Plan and execute facility operations where appropriate, including ensuring adequate space for assigned activities.
• Maintain compliance with all appropriate regulations and guidelines, including the company’s quality system. Maintain competence in these areas.
• Assess, coach, train and develop employees at all levels.
• Oversee the transfer of technology to manufacturing and other development sites.
• Participate as a key leader of the company and department in forums, discussions, and decisions.
• Fifteen years’ relevant, cross-functional experience in the design, manufacture and development of medical device products.
• Solid, demonstrable leadership experience managing projects and programs of at least $10M in scope and at least 30 contributors.
• Experience in managing and coordinating geographically distributed and ethnically diverse development teams.
• Sound strategic planning experience, business judgment, negotiating skills, organizational development, staff measurement and motivation.
• Passion for product development in the medical device marketplace.
• Familiarity with contemporary product development and manufacturing techniques and trends.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
