Environmental Engineer

Environmental Engineer Leading international mining group seeks upwardly mobile Environmental Engineer for operations in Montana.  REQUIREMENTS: Must take a personal and active approach to safety and environment and understand and follow all state, federal and company health, safety and environment requirements including MSHA. Make safe operations a key planning parameter in all aspects of performing the other duties of this position. Manage all permitting, monitoring and reporting requirements relating to the regulatory agencies involved with surface coal mining. A sample of the agencies involved include the Department of Environmental Quality, Office of Surface Mining, Bureau of Land Management, Environmental Protection Agency, Corp of Engineers, US Fish & Wildlife Services, and MSHA. Perform project management duties associated with obtaining major and minor permit revisions. Serve as contract coordinator on all consulting contracts to ensure all safety standards are met. Coordinate with regulatory compliance activities effectively with appropriate mine personnel to ensure that company and regulatory standards are met. This would include overseeing waste handling guidelines and procedures, managing the Spill Prevention Control Plan and administering the Toxic Release Inventory. Administer the Environmental Management System (EMS) which would include making certain all routine notifications and renewals are not overlooked, ensure EMS targets are up to standards, and provide training to hourly personnel to insure excellent compliance with permit commitments and EMS requirements. Coordinate with regulatory agencies and inspectors to ensure that compliance issues are communicated and handled proactively. Oversee the inspection and sampling programs for air, water, and soils. Direct all reclamation and bond release activities at the mine site. Understand and coordinate land activities and work with the community and government officials as required. Control central filing system regarding all environmental regulatory activities. Understand and promote process improvement and change initiatives. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Education/Experience Requirements: Successful candidate must have a Bachelors degree in Environmental Engineering or related engineering or science and a valid driver’s license. 7+ years of experience in regulatory compliance in the surface coal mining industry is preferred. Project management and negotiation skills are necessary. A Professional Engineer is desirable and project and negotiation skills will be preferred. Experience in terrain modeling, backfill planning, stream channel hydraulics is desirable. Knowledge of plant ecology, soil science, issues regarding water quality and ISO14001 are also valuable Strong computer skills required, including Word and Excel, AutoCad and Survcadd is preferred. Any experience working with regulatory agencies is helpful.
