Senior Metallurgical Engineer

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

This position reports directly to the Quality & Metallurgy Manager with a functional relationship to R&D Manager. Reporting to this position will be the Lab Production Supervisor and R&D Supervisor along with associated technicians. This position will work closely with the other QA and Metallurgy staff as well as other departments to provide technical support for product and processes.

 

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

This position has numerous contacts with customers and suppliers on a variety of technical tasks.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.  Manages the Production lab through the Production Lab Supervisor.

2.  Manages the portfolio of R&D projects through the Research Supervisor.

3.  Improves the laboratory processes and systems via a cross-functional leadership role.

4.  Develops and help improve metallurgical process related to the large and small press extrusions.

5.  Manages and runs a portfolio of technical projects and plant objectives.

6.  Performs appropriate data analysis (control charts, histograms, regression, DOE, etc.) to understand and improve on product capabilities and control and to maintain compliance to the appropriate material and process specifications.

7.  Maintains compliance of UAC processes and procedures to customer and industry specifications.

8.  Have the skills and knowledge to interpret customer specifications and other contractual documents and implement the applicable requirements.

9.  Develops and performs training for UAC employees.

10.  Supports other QA & Metallurgy staff functions.

11.  Complies with all safety, health and environmental policies, rules and regulations. Including familiarity and understanding of JSA’s & BSA’s for related work areas.

12.  Personal protection equipment is to be worn and/or used at all times as directed for the position.

13.  Performs other required duties as needed in addition to the essential responsibilities described above.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.  Education:  B.S./M.S. in Material Science and Engineering preferred.

2.  Experience:  3 or more years experience preferred, recent graduates are acceptable with demonstrated abilities in leadership and project management. Strong candidates will have hard alloy and/or extrusion experience.

3.   Communication skills:  Excellent verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.  Must be able to resolve conflict with internal or external sources always in the utmost professional manner.

 

4.   Mathematical skills: Commiserate with an engineering degree. Experience in process modeling is a plus.

 

5. Reasoning skills:  Must possess excellent reasoning skills to solve technical and personnel problems.

 

6. Certifications and Licenses:  None required.

 

7. Physical demands:  Ability to stand and walk for a minimum of 50% of the time, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach with hand and arms, feel with hand and fingers 30% of the time, talk and hear in person and on the phone 80% of the time.
