AMBULATORY STAFF VETERINARIAN- Tufts Ambulatory Service
Within the Department of Environmental and Population Health, the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University operates a satellite clinic in Woodstock, CT that delivers round the clock ambulatory service for a variety of food and fiber animals and horses in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Tufts Ambulatory Service provides quality veterinary service to clients, superior education to students, support for agriculture in the community, and professional growth for its faculty and staff. The overall goal of the Clinic is to complement the didactic and in-house clinical training provided to students in our hospitals with a practical hands-on approach in a setting typical of most large animal practices in New England. There are currently seven clinicians in Tufts Ambulatory Service. On an annual basis, veterinarians in the section make approximately 3,000 farm calls, tending to over 16,000 bovines, 2,200 horses, 700 sheep, 600 goats, and 650 llamas or alpacas.
The clinician will be responsible for on-farm primary veterinary care of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, swine, and camelids for area farmers and University owned livestock, both on the farm and in the haul-in area of the clinic. The clinician will participate on 2nd and 4th year clinical rotations by instructing students while on calls and participate in rounds. The clinician will equally share on-call responsibility with the other full time clinicians in the service. Additional responsibilities include the following:Seeing patients and clients; Creating diagnostic plans and treating patients; Carrying out routine veterinary services and charging appropriate fees for services.
Basic Requirements: B.S. Degree and DVM or equivalent will be required at time of hire. Must obtain veterinary licensure in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Should be qualified to provide entry level veterinary services to livestock owners and be able to work on his/her own. Should be willing and able to handle veterinary emergencies in the field.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Must participate in rotating on-call schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
