 JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Position: Activities Specialist

 

Department: School- Aged Programs

 

Status:  Seasonal, Full-time / Part-time

 

Primary Function:  Implement special program activities, monitor and manage children’s behavior and communication, ensure children’s safety.

 

Immediate Supervisor:  Administrator of Education or AS/Camp  Director

 

Qualifications:  Must have specialized program skills which directly relate to the special activity for which this position is responsible. Must demonstrate strong verbal / written communication and listening skills with children, their families and co-workers. Must demonstrate ability to guide group activities with appropriate and nurturing concern for fairness and safety. Must demonstrate a desire to make activities to children, interesting, educational and fun. Must be flexible to change and have the energy to participate in activities as appropriate.

 

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in education or field related to special activity provided. Certificate or transcript from special training program.

 

Responsibilities / Tasks:

 

1.  Plan and develop group activities in coordination with the Program Director, which meet the development needs of children enrolled. Create stimulating specialized activities and maintain a positive an affirming environment.

 

2.  Responsible for organizing and maximizing the physical environment which is available i.e. the classroom or activity room, with the approval of the Program Director.

 

3.  Performs some housekeeping duties in order to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the activity area and to prepare it for the next group or next days activity.

 

4.  Implement program activities in conjunction with other program staff, using a team approach; which complements and integrates the various skills and styles of all included.

 

5.  Identifies the need for program supplies and makes requests as appropriate.

 

6.  Communicate daily with parents to update as to child’s progress or answer questions about child’s activities.

 

7.  Immediately respond to all incidents of safety, injury or illness. Involves the Program Director as soon as possible in all incidents and submits a written report within 24 hours.

 

8.  Attend all assigned staff meetings and professional development trainings.

 

9.  Assumes responsibility for professional growth and conduct.

 

10.  Upholds and abides by MSCF’s mission, policies and procedures.

 

11.  Assumes other duties as assigned.

 

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stoop, kneel, sit on the floor, stand and walk; reach with hands and arms and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls.  The employee is occasionally required to crouch, crawl or run.

 

The employee must sometimes lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.

 

Employee is regularly required to participate in recreational activities such as sports, running and jumping.  Employee is also required to attend and participate in field trips such as amusement parks, bowling, skating and other recreational events.

 

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions, including the supervision of outside play activities. Primary functions are contained within the indoor setting outdoor activities and field trips.

 

Hazards: Employees occasionally may use hazardous substances for cleaning purposes and may come in contact with fumes, airborne particles and body fluids. The employee may be subject to loud noise as normally produced by groups of children. This employee may occasionally be exposed to clients, both adult and child, who are angry or upset. Appropriate measures should be taken to avoid confrontation.
