Activities Specialist-Lifeguard

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Position: Activities Specialist-Lifeguard

 

Department: School- Aged Programs

 

Status:   Full-time Non-Exempt

  Temporary/Seasonal

 

Primary Function:  Implement special program activities, monitor and manage children’s behavior and communication, ensure children’s safety. Ensures the safety of pool patrons and assists with aquatic programs and pool operation.

 

Immediate Supervisor:  Administrator of Education or AS/Camp Director

 

Qualifications:  Must demonstrate strong verbal / written communication and listening skills with children, their families and co-workers. Must demonstrate ability to guide group activities with appropriate and nurturing concern for fairness and safety. Must demonstrate a desire to make activities to children, interesting, educational and fun. Must be flexible to change and have the energy to participate in activities as appropriate.

 

Education/Experience:

Minimum High School Diploma plus experience life guarding or Bachelor’s degree in education or field related to special activity provided. Must possess a valid Life guarding Certificate and First Aid certificate. Must be certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer.







Responsibilities / Tasks:

 

1.  Plan and develop group activities in coordination with the Program Director, which meet the development needs of children enrolled. Create stimulating specialized activities and maintain a positive an affirming environment.  This may include conducting patron swimming test to assess ability to swim independently and unattended.

 

2.  Safeguards and regulates conduct of pool patrons. Enforces pool policies, rules, and regulations.  

 

3.  Test water quality in pool and maintains appropriate records. Assists in the proper maintenance and sanitary up keep of the pool, pool area, and bath rooms. Performs some housekeeping duties in order to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the activity area and to prepare it for the next group or next day’s activity.

 

4.  Implement program activities in conjunction with other program staff, using a team approach; which complements and integrates the various skills and styles of all included.

 

5.  Identifies the need for program supplies and makes requests as appropriate.

 

6.  Communicate daily with parents to update as to child’s progress or answer questions about child’s activities.

 

7.  Rescues patrons and performs appropriate follow-up procedures, as needed, including the proper use of equipment in the performance of first aid.

 

8.  Immediately respond to all incidents of safety, injury or illness. Involves the Program Director as soon as possible in all incidents and submits a written report within 24 hours.

 

9.  Attend all assigned staff meetings and professional development trainings.

 

10.  Assumes responsibility for professional growth and conduct.

 

11.  Upholds and abides by MSCF’s mission, policies and procedures.

 

12.  Assumes other duties as assigned.

 



Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear children; be outdoors for extended periods of time and be submerged in a swimming pool.  The employee must sometimes lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.



 

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. Primary functions are contained within a swimming pool.

 

Hazards: Employees occasionally may use hazardous substances for cleaning purposes and may come in contact with fumes, airborne particles and body fluids. The employee may be subject to loud noise as normally produced by groups of children. This employee may occasionally be exposed to clients, both adult and child, who are angry or upset. Appropriate measures should be taken to avoid confrontation.
