The Institute for Developing Nations at Emory University is currently seeking an Associate Director.The Institute for Developing Nations (IDN) at Emory University promotes research that addresses issues related to understanding and alleviating the underlying causes of poverty in the developing world. IDN brings together the academic resources of a major research university, the experience of The Carter Center, a prominent and respected non-governmental organization, and strategic partnerships with scholars, policy makers, and research institutes in the developing world. Thus, IDN is in a unique position to engage in fundamental theoretical and methodological innovation, enriching our knowledge of and tools for engaging development theory while charting new directions in development practice.For more information on IDN, please visit http://www.idn.emory.edu/index.phpJOB DESCRIPTION: The Associate Director reports to the Director and assists in key aspects of operations of the Institute for Developing Nations (IDN). Works with the IDN Academic Advisory Board which represents all of the schools at the university; the Executive Committee of the Academic Advisory Board; the Carter Center; and, once it is created, the External Advisory Board. In addition, works closely with faculty throughout the university. Collaborates with the Director in the creation and implementation of a strategic plan including identifying goals, benchmarks, outcomes, timelines and funding needs. Monitors progress toward strategic goals. Develops strategic partnerships with NGO partners. Establishes partnerships with other initiatives at Emory. Manages the annual RFP Process. Writes, publicizes and communicates information regarding RFPs. Guides faculty research interests toward research initiatives that are consistent with IDN's research priorities. Develops project evaluation plan. Manages conferences and other public events related to IDN-sponsored research. Writes reports on progress toward strategic goals as well as other Institute activities. Identifies and cultivates foundation relations and grant opportunities. Oversees IDN's communication strategy. Supports institutional relationships with foreign institutions in connection with IDN research. Performs related responsibilities as required.QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A graduate degree and five years of program-related experience related to development or higher education. Knowledge of Micro-soft Office projects; strong writing and communication skills. Language proficiency in French or Spanish and experience with academic grant-writing and fund-raising preferred. In-country experience in sub-Saharan Africa or other regions in the developing world is desirable. Familiarity with NGOs and project-based fundraising is a plus. Knowledge about historical and contemporary scholarship and the practice of development and significant place-based experience in the developing world. PREFERRED:* French or Spanish* Work experience in developing world* NGO or university-related work experience
