BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee is a world leader in relief, rehabilitation, protection, post-conflict development, resettlement and advocacy for families uprooted by humanitarian emergencies.  The IRC Gift Planning and Major Gifts Team is an important partner in the IRC’s $50+ million Development Department and is poised for growth.  A Gift Planning Officer will cultivate and solicit donors and develop a growing pool of major and planned giving donors as an important means to expanding the IRC’s fundraising.

 

SCOPE OF WORK:

As an integral member of the IRC Major Gifts and Gift Planning Team, the Gift Planning Officer will be responsible for taking a lead in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding a portfolio of approximately 600 supporters and a growing pool of excellent prospects through face-to-face visits.  The Officer will direct strategies that require collaboration with the President, Vice President for Development, and other IRC staff, trustees, and volunteers.  The Officer will also shape new marketing initiatives and drive donor recognition and engagement efforts.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:As part of a unique, highly engaged, and ambitious team that enjoys working together, conduct relationship-building initiatives with donors and collaboratively with other gift officers;Lead efforts to cultivate and solicit a regional portfolio of donors and prospects for both planned gifts and to a lesser extent, major gifts support;Represent the IRC’s life saving work and worldwide impact to supporters;Engage Board and Overseers, and donor volunteers in donor stewardship;Brainstorm, shape, and craft donor communications in print and on the web and manage consulting relationships and other departments to aid in these efforts;Guide donor recognition and engagement strategies;Draft proposals and correspondence, and prepare strategy, briefing, and debriefing materials;Track actions in Raisers Edge and other software applications;Collaborate with Special Events, Direct Response, program and regional teams to advance fundraising efforts;And undertake special projects as assigned by Director.

REQUIREMENTS:Bachelors Degree, with advanced degree or equivalent;Min. 4-6 yrs. progressive non-profit experience, with experience in major gifts, planned giving, direct response, special events, banking, communications and marketing, law, account management, and/or related fields;Passion for the IRC’s mission to bring refugees from harm to home;Communication skills: the proven ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person;People skills: the ability to work with colleagues across departments and at multiple levels to promote productivity in a pleasant work environment; Organizational skills: the ability to work independently, flexibly, and productively in a fast-paced environment and the ability to manage a multi-faceted workload;Computer skills: facility with MS Word, Excel, fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge, PIDI) and email/internet software;Valid driver’s license; andAbility to travel 6-8 trips per year to visit with donors across the country.
