 POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Title:   scattered sites housing search coordinator    grade 4 Transitional Apartment Program Division of Housing and Homeless Services

 

DIRECT REPORT:  Program Manager, Residential Housing Stabilization Program/Scattered Sites 

STATUS: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY: The Housing Search Coordinator supports program residents by assisting them to access housing programs, preparing and updating housing case records, and following up with participants as they establish their lives beyond the shelter.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Educating participants on and assisting them with housing needs including: 

o  Applying to federal, state, and unit based housing subsidy programs.

o  Understanding tenants’ rights, state sanitary codes, rental applications & fair housing laws

o  Developing good economic literacy, including budgeting skills

o  Accompanying clients to courts to address financial/credit problems.

· Coordinating participants’ exit from the program including:

o  Locating funds for first, last, and security deposit

o  Transporting clients to housing briefing sessions and available units

o  Following up with participants as they establish their lives beyond the shelter

· Managing  the RHSP/SSTAP apartment units including:

o  Searching for and securing new units when replacement becomes necessary

o  Purchasing replacement furniture for units when necessary

o  Maintaining a good working relationship with area landlords and housing authorities

o  Providing our fiscal department with the necessary paperwork to process monthly rents

o  Creating and maintaining housing leasing files on all our units

o  Coordinating annual housing inspections of units through our inspection department.

· Supporting  Case Manager in the event of client crisis

· Providing client response via cell phone and/or coordinating with program manager to address:  

o  domestic violence safety crises with safety planning and safe house relocation, if needed

o  emergency placement for children in the event of crises

o  clients’ mental health crises including evaluation of substance abuse conditions.

· Maintaining accurate case records by documenting all services rendered.

· Attending trainings in relevant fields to enhance educational and professional development.

· Attending weekly supervision and bi-monthly staff meetings.

· Other Job related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:Associate’s Degree preferred; BA in Human Services or related field a plus. Three to five years experience working with low- income families including experience with transitional housing programs, particularly residential housing, will substitute for degree. Knowledge of Greater Lowell’s housing stock.  Two years experience working with victims of domestic violence preferred.
