Media Relations Manager

The School District of Philadelphia’s Office of Communications is seeking a Media Relations Manager to join our professional team. This is administrative communications work involving the implementation of various communications initiatives as part of a public relations program to promote the School District’s organizational goals. This position serves as an official public voice for the Office of the Chief Executive Officer, the School Reform Commission (SRC) and other crucial arms of the District and are responsible for communicating with news media representatives on various issues, preparing news releases and assisting the SRC and designated School District departments in the proactive development of newsworthy stories. Work involves writing and editing speeches, and articles for internal and external publications and other journalistic materials. Work additionally involves functioning as a rotating, on-call member of the District’s round-the-clock media accessible communications team. Additional functions involve acting as the Communications Officer liaison to the SRC and may involve producing and serving as the on-air host of the School District’s cable television magazine show.

 

Responsibilities include: developing pitches and proactive media strategies; responding to media requests; coordinating media interviews with senior personnel; drafting press releases and speeches; cultivating and maintaining relationships with local, national, education trade and business press; and generating PowerPoint presentations.  

 

An ideal candidate will be professional with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of agency, non-profit or corporate public relations experience. Must have the ability to independently prioritize activities and implement initiatives as well as manage a variety of demands in a challenging, deadline-driven environment. Excellent management skills are critical, and a background or interest in public education is a plus.
