Ophthalmic Technician II
The Doheny Eye Institute, dedicated to the “restoration, preservation, and improvement of human eyesight is an independent, non-profit organization affiliated with the University of Southern California, and has emerged as a world-renowned center for vision research, education, and patient care. JOB SUMMARY:Provides technical ophthalmic assistance to the medical staff of the service assigned according to established protocol.
1. Performs all necessary tests and patient work-up in order for physicians to adequately diagnose patients. (Percent of time: 75%) These include:
A. Running automated visual fields
B. Methods of lensometry
C. Methods of measuring and recording distance and near vision, color vision testing, pinhole, etc.
D. Basic tonometry
E. Basic refractometry
F. Keratometry
2. Obtains and records patients past ocular history, family history, adverse drug reactions, allergies, etc., according to established techniques and procedures. Identifies patient's chief complaint and history of present illness. (Percent of time: 10%)
3. Performs basic maintenance of instruments and equipment to ensure that they are clean and in proper working condition. (Percent of time: 5%)
4. Performs inventory of assigned examining rooms to ensure adequate supplies. Stocks and orders supplies as needed. (Percent of time: 3%)
5. Follows appropriate protocol and specific job duties as required by the Service assigned (see attachment 1)
6. Performs other related duties as assigned by Clinical Services Manager. (Percent of time: 2%)
7. Performs all tasks in a safe manner in compliance with company safety policies and according to applicable regulations; maintains a neat work station and environment. (Ongoing)
8. Displays courtesy and consideration to patients, guests, physicians and staff. (Ongoing)
9. Maintains confidentiality of all records and information which pertains to patients, physicians, employees, the organization and in related interests. (Ongoing)
10. Performs special projects or other related work as required or requested. (Percent of time: 1%)
11. Travel between DEMG sites as needed.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING (Include Licenses and Professional Activities):A. Education
1. High school degree or GED.
B. Experience1. COA certification required with 1-2 years back office experience in ophthalmology practice. COT certification highly preferred or eligible for exam within six months of employment.
C. Abilities and Characteristics 1. Good communication skills. 2. Ability to interact effectively with patients and physicians. 3. Good knowledge of and experience with requirements for Ophthalmic 4. Assistant Certification (COA) as outlined by JCAHPO guidelines.
