General Description

BSCS is a non-profit, K-12 science education organization whose mission is to provide leadership in curriculum development, professional development, and research and evaluation. Currently, BSCS seeks a publications manager for its Office of Publications, which provides production and publication oversight, management, and services for the entire organization. This position involves managing the production of products as well as managing individuals. The products include comprehensive textbooks in the sciences K-12, supplementary instructional materials, monographs, reports, binders for professional development services, and promotional materials, for example. The products include both print and multimedia. Some products require long production time lines across a year, and other products require a short production time line of a few weeks or days. At any one time there may be from three to ten projects in different phases of production. The publications manager is expected to coordinate the production schedules and tasks; work closely with outside vendors such as editors, illustrators, designers, photographers, videographers, publishers, and printers; and work collaboratively with the BSCS staff to produce high quality materials. 

 

The publications manager will report to the Director of Operations and is expected to work closely with the directors of the three programmatic centers, the communications department, and the administrative offices.

 

Experience

The publications manager must have relevant, appropriate experience for the position. Candidates for the position must present verifiable credentials and letters of support that demonstrate exemplary expertise. This person must have a broad understanding of print and media production processes and publications including parameters of different style guides, editing, design, and pre-press and printing specifications, as well as specific experience in educational publishing.  In general, we expect that this person will have at least five years of experience in a similar position.

 

Educational Background

The person in this position must have a Bachelor’s degree in English or a closely related field.  A Master's degree is preferred. 





Specific Duties and Responsibilities • Oversee and manage production time lines on projects across the organization • Set project time lines in collaboration with project staff • Oversee the quality of all work accomplished through the office of publications • Provide expert guidance with respect to editing and style • Effectively manage people within the office of production • Communicate clearly and often with project teams and center directors • Set priorities for the production office • Help set standards and guidelines for each type of material we produce • Ensure our products meet our standards of excellence Other Duties Professional staff members must have the ability to manage complex tasks and tight deadlines. The publications manager should expect a certain amount of travel. In addition to normal administrative responsibilities, staff members are often asked to participate in activities that promote the general well-being of the organization. The director of operations and the executive director may assign other duties to the publications manager, as they deem necessary.
