Vice President & Controller

United Way of America is the national organization dedicated to leading the United Way movement in making a measurable impact in every community in America. Our mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities. We are currently seeking a Vice President & Controller for our Tri-State office in New York City.

As the Vice President and Controller for UWA Tri-State you will be responsible for managing all financial affairs. Major responsibilities include: (1) Providing advice and counsel on all matters of a financial nature, including preparation and analysis of operating and capital budgets, fund accounting and reporting, cash and investment management, and performance analysis. (2) Maintaining an effective system of internal controls and an audit program to substantively assure the safeguarding of assets and compliance with business plans, contracts, agreements, Board resolutions and applicable laws and regulations.

 

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

 

• Develop and maintain an effective system of internal controls, including written documentation of key financial policies and procedures. Design and conduct an ongoing program to audit the highest exposure (dollar, public perception, etc.) business activities of the UWA Tri-State. Administer all general ledger, accounts payable and banking security controls.

 

• Develop the annual operating and capital budgets. Monitor operational spending against budget monthly, reporting and analyzing actual performance versus authorized expenditure levels and identifying potential problems and recommendations for resolutions.

• Prepare the monthly financial reporting package and consolidation reports, the annual audited financial statements, and other reporting requirements specified by contracts and agreements (e.g. grants and charitable foundations.) Keep abreast of changes to generally accepted accounting principles and best practices affecting not-for-profit entities along with changes to tax laws.

 

• Manage the United Way of Tri-State cash position and investments to insure maximum yield in accordance with UWA Board policy and that all financial obligations are met.

 

• Manage the monthly general ledger close, weekly accounts payable, and daily cash management processes, and all phases of the annual external audit. Manage the approval, reconciliation and settlement of affiliate/intercompany transactions.

 

• Direct the coordination of financial activities between UWA Tri-State and all participating United Ways to distribute monies in accordance with UWA Finance Committee decisions. Oversee reporting of receivables, collections and distributions during the year, and coordinate the annual reconciliation to insure that each has received the appropriate amount.

 

• Provide staff support, advice and counsel to Senior Executive in Charge, UWA Tri-State and UWA Chief Financial Officer. Work closely with UWA Finance team to coordinate financial reporting, budget and audit requirements.

 

• Provide for employment, training and development of all assigned staff to fulfill the objectives and responsibilities of the department in an effective and efficient manner, consistent with operating budgets and plans.

 

• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Senior Executive in Charge.

 

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration from an accredited institution.

 

12 to 15 years relevant work experience with 7 to 10 years of experience in accounting, finance or related business activities, with a minimum of three years of supervisory experience.

 

• Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills; strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Working knowledge of internal auditing, fund accounting and cash management.

• Demonstrated decision making, using creative problem solving and analytical skills.

• Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload to meet tight deadlines.

• Strong personal computing skills, including working knowledge of word processing, graphics and spreadsheet software applications.

• Ability to work with diverse groups and personalities.

• CPA and/or advanced degree in accounting or finance preferred.
