Vice President, Publishing
This senior management position is responsible for ensuring, through strategic thinking, effective planning, and a collaborative management style, that The IIA’s educational materials are the global leader for the profession and remain a leading driver of perceived member value.
Specifically, this senior executive will position and manage the business units responsible for content development of all IIA publications, including a four-color, bi-monthly magazine, in print and online; multiple newsletters; various custom publications; and The IIA Web site as well as curriculum development of all IIA seminars delivered virtually and in person. This position is also responsible for editorial services for IIA Headquarters staff, publication production, and the development of new media as it applies to publication dissemination. This senior executive will direct and manage a business unit responsible for generating 2.2M in revenue and controlling 2.4M in operating expenses.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:Plan, develop, and implement a strategy for departmental progression in support of The IIA’s agreed-upon Educational Materials objectives;Oversee all elements of the association’s publishing program, including editing and production of IIA Research Foundation books; the IIA flagship magazine, Internal Auditor; content for www.theiia.org ; multiple online newsletters; and various custom publications.In conjunction with the IIA’s volunteer structure, develop and disseminate information on news and topics of interest to the profession ensuring that IIA publications reach the broadest relevant audience. Monitor the evolving print and online publishing requirements of IIA members to ensure that the products delivered anticipate and serve member needs.Establish and maintain appropriate systems for measuring performance; monitor, measure, and report on those plans and achievements within agreed-upon formats and timelines;Develop and maintain educational content for IIA seminars, including virtual classrooms, self-studies, and on-location courses.Ensure print and online production methods are effective and up to date.Facilitating content development in print and online publications as well as curriculum development; formulating the strategies necessary to achieve budget-related objectives; and developing innovative metrics for assessing the effectiveness of the continuum of the publishing activity. Develop and oversee the execution of a strategy for providing best-in-class editorial services to IIA members and customers; Working in tandem with the Educational Programs area, develop and maintain an education strategy and curriculum relevant to the professional needs of internal auditors. Maintain relationships with the Education, Editorial, and Program Development committees as part of the Professional Development Advisory Council of The IIA; Participate in IIA organizational meetings concerning the development of custom publications, problem or issue identification, and resolution;Communicate throughout the organization internally and externally on key matters related to trends, activities, needs, results, and performance aspects, both operational and financial in nature;Travel to various IIA events domestically and internationally throughout the year as needed; and Assist the Chief Operating Officer with the successful execution of special projects as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervise three exempt Director level managers with a staff of thirteen exempt and non exempt staff in the following departments: Editorial Content, Curriculum Development Department, and Production and New Media.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
B.A., B.S., or equivalent degree, preferably in Journalism or English; and a minimum of seven to ten years’ related experience and/or training in magazine and other publishing; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Effective leadership and people management skills are essential. Association management experience including leadership of a $1 million-plus publishing operation, preferably with a global organization, is required; new media production or internal auditing experience in a managerial capacity would be a plus.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Solid experience working with the MacIntosh publishing platform, including InDesign Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat) and Dreamweaver necessary. Knowledge of publication and Web production essential. Intermediate or higher ability to work in a computerized environment featuring Microsoft Office products.
