Volunteer Manager
SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is a nonprofit that envisions an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with K-3 children who need literacy support. Participating children also receive new books each month to keep and read with their families. Since 1992, thousands of SMART volunteers have been inspiring little readers through storytelling.
SMART is seeking a team-oriented Volunteer Manager to be a part of the successful SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) early literacy program.

Position Title: Volunteer Manager
Status: Exempt
Position Summary: The volunteer manager is responsible for creating and implementing a statewide volunteer plan and campaign to meet SMART’s annual volunteer goals. A key component of this job is to work closely with field and development managers to determine appropriate volunteer goals, strategies and action plans for each area. The volunteer manager will also work closely with the marketing/PR manager to develop and promote appropriate volunteer tools, resources and messaging. This position requires approximately 50% travel time across the state of Oregon.

Primary Responsibilities:
Volunteer Plan and Campaign:Develop and manage statewide volunteer plan and campaign including role definition; assist in the development of job descriptions, (volunteer program coordinator, reader, chapters, committees, board, events, etc.), recruitment, training, supervision, recognition, retention and evaluation Develop and manage statewide volunteer recruitment campaign, creating new and innovative opportunities to recruit and utilize volunteers Develop a system for coordinating volunteer activities with Managers at all program levels (coordinators, readers, etc.) Work with field and development managers to integrate volunteer recruitment into chapters; create and pilot ad hoc volunteer recruitment committees for high-need communities Work with Development/Marketing team and SMART partners to create and manage special volunteer recruitment activities/promotions/recognition program to honor volunteers Recruit and coordinate volunteers for specific purposes (e.g., events), as needed Develop a system for evaluating the effectiveness of the volunteer program Create written surveys of volunteer satisfaction. Use results to improve program
Tools and Training: Work with marketing/PR manager to develop effective statewide volunteer recruitment messaging, campaign strategies, and materials Develop, implement and maintain on-line resources for volunteers (e.g., application, training, recruitment, materials/handbook) Orient all new volunteers to the organization’s history, policies and mission. Develop training program with field managers. Create and implement volunteer recruitment module for coordinators and chapters, including community-based recruitment plans Develop a formal procedure which matches volunteer skills and interests with work requirements Support development and management of volunteer program coordinator training/reader training, engagement, retention and recognition
Field Support:Work with field and development managers to recruit appropriate volunteers to lead and participate in chapters Work with field and development managers to effectively engage businesses with SMART (6-Ways) Support area volunteer sponsor cultivation and activities Provide additional volunteer-related support to field managers as needed Develop communication system that reaches out to volunteers on a regular basis.
Other:Work with staff on issues related to background checks and risk management Use (and promote use of) Raiser’s Edge to effectively plan, track, and report volunteer activities Ensure a system that responds promptly to potential volunteers and requests for volunteers Complete other related tasks as assigned by the Program Director
Knowledge and Skills:Proven track record in volunteer management & recruitment Ability to develop & implement grassroots volunteer campaigns Ability to interact exceptionally well with a diverse community Excellent project management skills Ability to develop and manage departmental budgets Knowledge of computer word processing and databases Excellent written and oral communication skills Strategic, creative thinker with strong interpersonal skills, sound technical skills, analytical ability and good judgment Ability to work collaboratively with leadership, peers, colleagues, external constituents, and community members while maintaining a leadership role in area of responsibility
Education and work experience:Bachelor’s degree preferred Certified Volunteer Administrator a plus Minimum 6 years experience in volunteer management & recruitment First hand experience developing comprehensive volunteer programs from the ground up
Physical Requirements:
This position requires approximately 50% travel time across the state of Oregon.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and/or sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
