Associate Director for Early Childhood Health

GRANT-FUNDED: Individual will provide leadership to thecomprehensive early childhood agenda at the National Centerfor Children in Poverty (NCCP), Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. The positionwill have a particular focus on helping states and communities implementeffective policies and evidence-based practices to promote healthy developmentfor children birth to eight years old. Individual will have responsibility foroverseeing and growing NCCP's comprehensive early childhood health agenda(including physical, mental, oral, and environmental health) as well as ProjectThrive. Project THRIVE is an early childhood policy support center serving 50state early childhood comprehensive system grantees funded through acooperative agreement with the Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau.Individual will provide leadership to Project THRIVE; work directly with thestate early childhood policy makers; develop policy analyses; offer policyconsultation to the states to promote evidence-based policies and practicesthat promote healthy early childhood development including medical homes, earlychildhood mental health issues, Part C Early Intervention, and related topics;monitor emerging health-related issues and research related to young childrenand families; identify opportunities for NCCP to provide leadership to thefield; work collaboratively with external organizations as well as the MailmanSchool of Public Health; represent NCCP and THRIVE at national forums and otherexternal meetings; generate ideas for grant proposals; work with the directorto seek funding; additional related duties.

 

Required: Bachelor's Degree, plus five years of relatedexperience.  Excellent oral/writtencommunication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated knowledge of earlychildhood systems with a particular expertise in a broad range of childhoodhealth issues, and evidence of analytic skills and capacity to integrate researchlessons into policy and practice recommendations. Management experience basedin child health programs and policy, and success in fundraising and proposaldevelopment.  Preferred:  Master's degree and ten years of experienceor Ph.D. in public policy, public health, mental health or related field.  Specific experience with early childhoodmental health and early intervention; demonstrated capacity as an innovativeresponsive manager; strong leadership abilities with peers as well asrecognition of leadership from relevant key stakeholders across the field, andexperience working in low income communities with diverse populations.
