Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Objective

The overall goal for this position is to maintain, modify, repair and overhaul all types of Material Handling Equipment and components.  Position reports directly to the Anchorage Manager.

Job Responsibilities:

· Troubleshoot to identify problems, and then takes necessary measures to correct problems.

· Performs repairs and services on various types of heavy equipment, 45 ton diesel forklifts, trucks, 980 series Cat loaders, dozers, small forklifts and Manitowoc cranes.

· Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction or breakdown.

· Install various kits, options, and components and perform modifications as requested on various material handling equipment.

· Identifies, disassembles, inspects, and replaces worn or broken parts. Fits and adjusts new or repaired parts.

· Test-drives repaired equipment.

· Uses drawings to troubleshoot and install components, hoses & electrical wiring.

· Documents all repairs on work orders and other company documents.

· Fuels, oils and greases material handling equipment & components; changes filters.

· Notifies users & managers of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken.

· Determines replacement/substitute parts for items no longer available.

· Other duties as assigned.

Job Knowledge:

· Minimum 3-5 years experience as a forklift or heavy equipment mechanic.

· Diesel Technical School graduate, AA degree preferred or equivalent experience

· Must be able to read blueprints, installations/process sheets, wiring diagrams and instruction manuals and have working knowledge of hydraulic & electrical systems.

· Position frequently works in a crouched position or on back lying on mechanics dolly beneath motor vehicle equipment; subjected to dust, dirt, and grease conditions.

· Must be available to accept night and weekend call outs in emergencies.

· Excellent communication skills verbal and written

· Excellent time management skills

· Ability to work in outdoor environment and long hours as necessary.

· Some travel required.
