Job Description:Job Title: Media Associate The Media Associate is the entry-level position for media professionals with Starcom MediaVest Group (SMG) companies including Starcom, Spark Communications, Tapestry and SMG Search. Media represents the business side of the advertising industry - it manages and stewards the advertising investments for clients, ultimately working to connect the advertising messages with the consumer and move a client's business forward. SMG's media associates complete an in-depth and highly-regarded training program and continue their professional development by gaining a well-rounded experience and diverse skill set via a series of assignments across SMG's Strategy and Activation teams: Associates in Strategy teams create and present recommendations about when and where a client's advertising dollars should be spent across a number of different places that consumers can connect with advertising content including but not limited to: television, magazines, internet, digital, cell phones, billboards on an expressway or in a sports stadium, and in-store opportunities. As a Media Associate, you will gather and analyze marketing data to determine the client's advertising placement needs, analyze alternative placement opportunities, and make recommendations on effective budget allocation. Recommendations typically include an in-depth analysis of consumer insights, an overview of the competitive advertising landscape, and budget allocations across the various consumer connection opportunities. The job often involves extensive use of spreadsheets, math calculations and percentages to create work results. Associates in Activation teams collaborate with Strategy teams and work with outside sales professionals to bring the advertising investment recommendations to life in the most effective and efficient way. They develop strong partnerships with outside sales professionals and have a deep understanding of every aspect of the client's business and advertising placement opportunities. These opportunities include the number of people a particular advertising placement will reach, the availability to purchase advertising space, and the cost associated with each opportunity. They utilize industry data sources and SMG systems to validate their actions. They gain skills in negotiating prices and terms with each advertising placement partner where orders are eventually placed - often in millions of dollars. Activation associates also monitor the purchase to ensure that all ads run as ordered, deliver audiences as promised, and are billed and paid correctly. Success in both of these groups requires deep analytical skills, math proficiency, good consumer understanding, creativity, negotiation skills, attention to detail, ability to thrive in team settings, and a working knowledge in the use of spreadsheets.
