Department Description

 

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, this position will serve as research support to Unit PIs, and other research staff and designated personnel.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

•  Meets regularly with the Principal Investigator and research team for direction in order to conduct cellular, molecular, and translational experiments, collect data, troubleshoot outcomes, analyze results, and perform statistical calculations.

•  Coordinates and participates in laboratory and research activities and is performed in accordance with a specific project outline and under technical supervision of a principal investigator or scientific staff member who reviews the work.

•  Conducts experiments and research according to previously adopted and outlined procedures and techniques as well as develops new procedures and techniques as they are needed. Work requires exercise of independent judgment and a basic theoretical knowledge in planning experiments.  Prepares solutions, reagents, and other laboratory reagents according to standard laboratory formulas and procedures.

•  Proficient in procedures for cell culture, transfections and western blots.

•  Provides technical assistance to research technicians, designated personnel, students, interns and volunteers.

•  Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balances, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope and laminar flow hood. May also utilize sophisticated instrumentation and techniques such as fluorescent microscopy, confocal microscopy, real-time PCR, adenoviral construct preparation and other more advanced technical procedures.

•  Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and knowledge gained through previous training to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.

•  Uses various software applications such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages and graphics packages to manipulate and/or format data and grants/manuscripts.

•  Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from bio-hazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens and provides safety training to others as appropriate. Complies with all safety, regulatory and institutional regulatory issues as well as maintains IACUC and WIRB approved compliance. Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.

•  Performs other duties as assigned.
