Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Requisition Number: TMT10053 Job Title: Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer Anticipated Hiring Range: $100,000-$140,000 Job Summary The TMT project is a collaboration of Caltech, University of California (UC) and the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA). The TMT project office in Pasadena leads and coordinates the work in Pasadena and at partner locations. Reporting to the Telescope Optics Group Leader, the Sr. Opto-Mechanical Engineer will work with contractors developing the designs for the primary mirror segment support assemblies, the secondary mirror assembly and the tertiary mirror assembly, and will play a lead role in the design of the associated coating, cleaning, handling and in-situ testing equipment. Job Duties The Opto-Mechanical Engineer will: Develop error budgets Perform tolerance studies Develop design requirements for telescope optics and support systems Develop interface documents for telescope optics and support systems Perform and direct analyses and optimizations using FEA Utilize SolidWorks CAD system to guide and monitor design effort Monitor and coordinate opto-mechanical engineering activities by partner institutions and vendors Support cost vs. performance tradeoffs Leads the design of equipment for in-situ testing, cleaning, and coating of the primary, secondary and tertiary mirrors Leads the development of design concepts for optic handling equipment Support the preparation of requests for proposals (RFPs) and related contract documents Write technical reports Prepare and deliver technical presentations Minimum Requirements An advanced degree in mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics or equivalent; PhD preferred 8 years experience in opto-mechanical engineering The project office is located in Pasadena and residence in the area is required. Significant travel will be required to partner, vendor and observatory locations. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Extensive knowledge of finite-element analysis (FEA) techniques Opto-mechanical analysis: Ability to analyze deformations of large optical elements using FEA and to evaluate the results in terms of optical aberrations Active opticsStress analysis Geometric-nonlinear and contact analysis Dynamic analysis (shock and vibration response)Experience with vibration testing of structures Knowledge of fracture mechanics Strong knowledge of geometrical tolerancing and dimensioning Experience with design of optomechanical assemblies and precision mechanisms Expertise with SolidWorks or equivalent solid-modeling program Strong background in geometrical optics Knowledge of large-optics fabrication and testing methods Excellent written and oral communication skills Record of publication in professional journals and conference proceedings Knowledge of Matlab is preferred Experience with the design of large astronomical telescopes is preferred Experience monitoring large procurement contracts is preferred Complementary Skills (preferred) The following complementary skills are a plus, but not required: Optical ray-tracing (Zemax or CodeV) Knowledge of optical metrology and interferometry Theoretical and/or practical experience Knowledge of optical coating design, process and inspection Experience using laser trackers or theodelites for making precision alignments Knowledge of cleaning methods used for large opticsTo be considered for the position and to apply online, please visit www.tmt.org.
