The successful candidate will join the Process Safety group with the primary responsibility of coordinating and implementing safety and environmental functions within the Kg-laboratory located in Pearl River, NY.The principle activities of the Process Safety group are process safety testing & evaluation for the scale-up of chemistries from bench to kg-scale. The successful candidate will identify, acquire and manage data, and analyze said data as appropriate to render all chemical processing and chemical handling in the Pearl River Kg-laboratory safe from detonation, deflagration, thermal explosion, combustive explosion, fire, toxic chemical exposure, and environmental damage. The successful candidate will have aptitude for and proficiency in integrating the aforementioned data into equations, that are then solved to identify safety and environmental hazards for new chemistries within the context of the process & equipment used, thereby, establishing the boundaries of safe operation. The tools used to this end will be numerous chemical, equipment, toxicological, & legal databases; some 23 apparati for hazards testing; 66 methods of scale-up analysis; and 12 analysis software systems allowing for the transformation of data to the appropriate scale and conditions. These tools and analyses span the gamut of disciplines from quantum mechanics, through electrodynamics, chemical and thermo kinetics, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanical and reactor engineering, chemodynamics, toxicology, and higher mathematics. The successful candidate is expected to be knowledgeable in these areas.Peripheral responsibilities for the candidate will include control of all environmental discharges to water and air; facilities engineering and design support; developing and maintaining data acquisition and management systems for archiving, record keeping, and compliance reporting; conducting risk and consequence analyses; developing environmental and safety procedures, policies, guidelines, and resources.The successful candidate will possess good verbal and written communication skills, as implementation of the safety and environmental program requires substantial coordination and communication with other departments and government agencies. Basic QualificationsThe candidate meeting the requirements to successfully perform these functions will likely possess a BS/BA + 5-8 years experience, MS/MA +3-5 years experience, or PhD +0-3 years experience in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physical chemistry, chemical physics, or engineering physics. Training and knowledge of organic chemistry and process development in the pharmaceutical industry is strongly desired.Relocation is not available for this position.
