Supervisor, Animal Husbandry

Position Summary:This position is responsible for providing supervisory support to the LAR program. The Animal Husbandry Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the animal husbandry technicians follow standard operating procedures for all animal husbandry procedures. The Supervisor assists the LAR Manager in managing the daily operations of the animal facility. Specific responsibilities include:• Ensure the animal husbandry technicians are qualified and trained to perform their job functions. Delegates tasks as needed in order to develop staff.• Review data collected by the animal husbandry technicians to ensure its accuracy. Update Investigators on animal health conditions.• Perform annual reviews and recommend salary adjustments. • Maintain staff training records. Provide employees feedback of work performance and take disciplinary action as needed.• Develop, validate and implement training programs for new procedures.• Write, review, and revise standard operating procedures for husbandry and equipment related procedures. Develop forms for data collection and organization.• Procure and maintain an inventory of supplies, materials and equipment as needed for animal husbandry procedures. • Prepare husbandry work schedules. Ensures that schedules are fair to all staff and staff is using their time wisely. Assist the animal husbandry staff in developing appropriate time management skills. • Maintain USDA animal census records. • Review IACUC protocols and Experimental protocols. Determine the husbandry support needs.• Perform technical procedures as requested by LAR Manager to include injections, physical examinations, gavage dosing, animal identification.• Maintain cleanliness of animal facility based on SOPs and standards set forth by AAALAC.• Assist in preparing for the AAALAC accreditation process.• Coordinate the sentinel animal health-monitoring program. • Interview and make recommendation to hire additional husbandry staff. Perform reference checks.• Follow all Environment Health and Safety practices and monitor husbandry staff to ensure compliance with these practices.• Use good judgment in making decision that affect the health and welfare of the animals. Develop a customer relationship with the departments that use LAR services and with the departments whose services support the LAR program.Requirements/Qualifications:Education: High school diploma or equivalentLAT certificationExperience: At least 3 years of experience working in a laboratory animal research setting Special Skills/Abilities: • Ability to lift objects frequently in performing daily work activities• Ability to pull or push objects on a regular basis• Ability to carry objects on a regular basis in the arms or on the shoulders• Ability to grasp objects utilizing the fingers (fine motor manipulation)• Ability to reach for objects above the head or below the waist.• Ability to stoop of crouch by bending at the waist or by bending the legs• Ability to withstand exposure to high temperature levels that may results in some body discomfort.• Knowledge and use of protective equipment and safety procedures related to the possible exposure to dusts, viruses, tissues, chemicals, fumes, vapors, and mists that could potentially affect the health of the employee• Knowledge of normal animal behavior for mouse, rat and hamster species• Knowledge of USDA, OLAW and AAALAC requirements• Knowledge of hazardous and infectious material handling• Excellent communication skills• Previous supervisory experienceJob Complexity: Medium. Understanding of safety requirements. Complete knowledge of sanitation and sterilization processes. Use of specialized equipment such as rack washer, autoclave, floor cleaner. Ability to humanely handle all species of laboratory animals. Ability to distinguish unhealthy animals from healthy animals.
