TECHNICAL SPECIALIST, POWERPLANT

JOB SUMMARY:

Perform daily data entry, filing and analysis of reports developed through FAA-required engine trend-monitoring programs.  Review aircraft discrepancies and trend-monitoring reports; provide corrective-action recommendations.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

1. Perform daily data entry and filing for FAA-mandated engine trend-monitoring program.  Analyze trend reports along with pilot discrepancies to assess engine performance.

2. Based on engine performance and trend-monitoring shifts, make corrective-action recommendations to the Aircraft Maintenance department.  Monitor engine trends for recovery following maintenance actions and make new recommendations based on trend shifts.

3. Maintain “Engine Watch” files for engines with performance-related issues.

4.  As assigned by Powerplant Manager, witness engine tear-downs at repair facilities to assess engine-hardware condition in relation to the ASTAR Maintenance program.

5.  Analyze related ATA alerts generated by the Maintenance Reliability department.  Provide detailed recommendations to improve powerplant reliability.

6. Maintain engine oil-watch and reduced-thrust take-off programs in accordance with ASTAR GMM.

7. Audit disk-trace packages and engine shop repair records for work performed and for FAR compliance.  Review manufacturer service bulletins and Airworthiness Directives for applicability to the ASTAR Fleet. 

8.  Perform other duties as assigned.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

 

1.  Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license.

2.  High-school diploma required.  Associate’s degree preferred.

3.  At least five (5) years of technical experience with a Part 121 airline, including a background in powerplant systems and performance.

4.  Knowledge of FARs, FAA Inspector’s Handbook, Operations Specifications, aircraft records and reliability programs.  Thorough knowledge of FAR Parts 121, 135 and 145.

5.  Ability to operate PC-based software or automated business systems.

6.  Ability to read and understand diagrams, manuals and documents and their effects on aircraft systems.

7.  Ability to work under tight time constraints and accomplish assignments and projects.


 

1.  Excellent presentation skills and/or communication skills both, oral and written.  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.  Ability to prepare analytical, detailed memos and reports.

2.  Ability to stand, stoop, and maneuver into small or awkward places and positions in order to inspect assigned aircraft, equipment and components, according to established procedures and requirements.  Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time in order to perform inspections of assigned equipment and aircraft. Ability to repeatedly bend, stoop or lift up to five pounds.

3.  As required by position, ability to ride lift platforms three (3) to forty (40) feet in the air in order to inspect aircraft.

4.  Ability to move and manipulate parts of various sizes and shapes using hand and inspection tools.  Capacity for manipulating small parts.

5.  Ability to travel for potentially extended periods of time to domestic locations in order to meet with ASTAR personnel and/or vendors.

6.  Ability to develop internal engineering documentation from technical data, and present technical/engineering data in a simplified manner to internal or external sources.

7.  Ability to interface with all functions and at all levels in the organization.

8.  Ability to analyze, apply, interpret and communicate policies, procedures and regulations effectively.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Work is typically performed in an office environment consisting of a cubicle with moderate office noise.  As required by position, may work outdoors in large open spaces, subject to all types of weather conditions including extremes of heat and cold.
