Embedded Firmware Development Engineer

Embedded firmware development for a high performance controller.

 

Develop, maintain and leverage real-time embedded firmware for a variety of electronic hardware platforms and print/scan engine mechanisms. At a high level, the firmware receives print data from the host computer via network interface, USB, or some other interface, processes the print data, converts it to a printable format, works with custom ASIC electronics to interface to the print mechanism, and controls the print mechanism.  The firmware is also responsible for interfacing with the scanner mechanism, including the processing of scan data, controlling the scanner, and handling scanner errors.

 

Responsibilities include development of embedded product firmware to interface with a network or local computer, interface with the print/scan engine, control the custom ASIC, and process the print data. Additional responsibilities may include performance analysis, leveraging firmware to various microprocessor architectures, and specification or creation of development tools.

 

Specific Job Responsibilities:

- Design, Develop, Debug and Maintain embedded firmware including Linux application level programming, Linux device driver level programming, and Linux kernel level programming.

- Work within the team to coordinate project development within product family development paradigm

- Lead less experienced members of the team in develop, debug, and best practices

- Work with print engine and/or scanner vendors to identify, triage, and drive to resolution interface issues between the RIP firmware and the scanner firmware. 

- Develop a Linux device driver to interface with a print/scan mechanism.

- Develop low level firmware to drive the custom video ASICs for a new printer mechanism.

- Work with the ASIC design team so specify and test new logic functions required to drive a specific print and/or scan mechanism.

- Leverage an existing code base to a new microprocessor architecture.

- Create image processing software that manipulates bitmap images into formats required for specific print engine technologies.

- Develop and tune software routines that improve perceived print quality or color accuracy of print mechanisms.

 

This job will require some travel to Asia – the expectation should be 2-3 trips per year for 10-14 days per trip.

 

Qualifications:

- BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. (GPA of 3.6/4.0 preferred, MS degree preferred.)

- Classwork should include:  digital design, computer architecture, data structures, high-level programming languages.  It is preferred that the candidate have classwork in:  software engineering principles, compiler design, operating system design, and algorithms.

- 5+ years C programming experience.

- 5+ years working in a Unix programming environment

- Understanding of microprocessor architectures and logic design concepts.

- Good verbal and written communication skills.

- Experience with image processing and/or color science is a plus.

- Experience with electro-photographic technologies is a plus.
