The Production Editor is fully responsible for managing the production process of a certain number of designated journals – typically journals of moderate to high complexity – from manuscript submission to print and electronic publication. This includes managing relationships with journal editorial offices, overseeing and reviewing vendor work, conducting setup of copy for production, and reviewing proofs and performing other quality control steps.

The primary responsibilities of this role will include:

Management of Journal Production & Related Administration (~90%) Manage production and workflow of journals by monitoring the timeliness of each issue, trafficking articles through copyediting, typesetting, proof distribution, proofreading, author/editor corrections, and printing, to ensure overall quality of product. Communicate with internal and external colleagues, vendors, and customers by phone, e-mail, and face to face contact to provide customer support and relationship management. Regularly manage and evaluate the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers, illustrators, and designers as required to ensure the overall quality of the journals and to ensure objectives and deadlines are met. Communicates to vendors and freelancers via email, phone and occasionally in person to provide direct guidance and feedback on their work. Coordinate production tasks with internal Production Central Services Group by logging requests, confirming required outcomes, and providing appropriate feedback to ensure that all required central service aspects of the production process are fulfilled. Regularly maintain all related logs and databases associated with journals in order to track and manage the scheduling and status of projects and to proactively manage and communicate issues as necessary. Oversee and monitor financial matters pertaining to the production process which includes creating and tracking to budgets, regularly reviewing costs to keep journals on or under budget; processing invoices for payments to vendors and freelancers to ensure timely and accurate payment; provide financial information to editorial office, vendors and freelancers as required.


Special Projects & Other (~10%) Participates in departmental groups with colleagues (such as freelance management team, supplements working group, etc) to improve processes and learn new skills. Participates in editorial and other meetings as required to discuss journal matters with an aim to stay abreast of current and future projects, and to continually improve internal processes and collaboration and external client relationships. As required, travel to vendors, editorial offices, and authors to maintain and continually improve our client relationships. As required, provide support at conferences, to include setting up, manning and breaking down exhibit booths; represent the Company which includes speaking with existing and potential customers, authors, editors and society executives, and taking orders for books and journals to help promote the Company image and to help maintain strong internal and external relationships. Participate in conference reporting for the shows attended.

Qualifications: Minimum of two years experience in a production/project management role or an equivalent role A Bachelor’s degree required Demonstrated effective organization and project management skills are essential including the ability to prioritize effectively and manage multiple projects/tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Requires demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills and excellent interpersonal skills at all levels of business with a strong orientation to providing outstanding service in order to effectively facilitate a multi-faceted process through various internal and external parties and to communicate effectively with all internal and external contacts. Strong relationship management skills are essential including the ability to relate successfully to people at all levels of business and to form and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with those people. Must have a keen attention to detail and strong follow-up skills with the ability to proactively identify and address problems quickly and independently. Must have a high level of proficiency with the MS Office suite, with specific emphasis on MS Excel and Word. Experience with computer database systems is desirable. Knowledge of electronic production systems (SGML, PDF, HTML, Pagination programs, etc.) is a strong plus. Must have the ability to work independently and have solid judgment and decision-making skills. Up to 10% travel may be required to visit vendors, editorial offices and to attend conferences, to include booking own travel, flying, and hotel stays including some weekends. Experience working with production budgets and creating and managing budgets pertaining to areas of freelance work, vendor services and overheads a plus. Experience with copyediting desirable.
