We currently have a leadership position in our Business Media department for a Senior Art Director in our Chicago office. The Senior Art Director will lead and manage a design team in conceptualizing, designing and producing business-to-business magazines for the Commercial Construction industry. The Senior Art Director will be responsible for marrying editorial with visual information for maximum impact in both print and, when appropriate, online formats. The Senior Art Director will be heavily involved in motivating the art team and communicating/collaborating on key initiatives/processes to the design, editorial, production and online staffs. This high-level position combines conceptual and managerial skills in developing and executing brand-specific graphic identity for three industry-leading national b-to-b magazines. This person will work with editors to set and reach design, editorial, and business goals. Senior Art Director job responsibilities include: • Hire and supervise art department staff. • Manage art department budget (art, photo, prepress, etc.)• Oversee all staff-designed pages, making sure the visual direction of each magazine is applied to every page. • Create and evolve all publication templates in transition from Quark to InDesign/K4• Oversee design-side K4 implementation including building and refining templates, communicating workflow, ensuring K4 to web process is followed. • Work with production director to ensure designs conform to printer requirements. • Assist editor in preparing variance reports. • Design feature articles, departments, columns, and product section, developing feature concepts around subject matter relevance and designing headline/typography treatments. • Assign/coordinate photo shoots when necessary. • Manage workflow to ensure all production deadlines are met. Qualified Senior Art Director Candidates must possess: • B.A. or B.S. in graphic design or related curriculum. • 8 to 10 years magazine design experience in an in-house corporate environment. • 5 years magazine art director experience. • In-depth knowledge of Macintosh and relevant graphic software, such as Quark Xpress, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat. • Experience with K4 or other editorial workflow software is a plus. • In-depth knowledge of prepress operations. • Vendor management experience. • Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages of development in organized and professional manner.
