The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific membership association and one of the top ten science publishers in the world. The Society publishes a weekly newsmagazine and over 30 peer-reviewed scientific journals, all of which have significant online presence. The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society provides to its customers and the worldwide scientific community a comprehensive collection of high quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences. As part of its marketing programs, ACS Publications participates in over 30 exhibits each year in addition to other special events that increase visibility for the department, expand sales and sales leads for the global sales force, and support journal programs managed by the Assistant Directors of journals and C&EN.
The ACS Publications Marketing Department is responsible for developing marketing strategies and implementing promotion and sales programs for ACS Publications Division’s product lines. Inherent in this is analyzing all results and recommending future meetings to support the overall program, planning and implementing successful domestic and international meetings, managing project budgets and working cooperatively across the ACS for larger exhibits.
Position Summary
This position is responsible and accountable for all planning and implementation of 30+ exhibits in the U.S. and abroad, multiple special events, receptions, and sales conferences. To be successful in this job the employee must have strong knowledge and successful background in planning and implementing successful events, onsite show management, negotiating and working with multiple vendors, project and program budgetary experience, experience with U.S. and foreign meetings and exhibits, excellent written and organizational skills.
Responsibilities include: developing the annual exhibit budget and schedule, planning and successful implementation of 30+ exhibits in the U.S. and overseas, negotiating with exhibit houses for custom booth packages, negotiating with a variety of companies for exhibit services (i.e. AV, furniture), complete understanding of shipping and drayage, experience planning receptions and meetings for 30-300 people, entertainment planning at receptions, project and program wide budgetary responsibility, communications within the department and across ACS, and other important skills. Job works in unison with sales staff, marketing staff, and others throughout the organization.
Education and Experience and Technical Requirements
Bachelors degree and 7+ years of strong event planning both in the U.S. and overseas. A certification in event/meeting planning is preferred. Candidate must be highly organized, able to manage multiple projects within budget, be detail oriented, and work within tight deadlines. Candidate must be familiar with managing individual project and overall annual budgets, possess excellent communication skills, have a successful track record in planning and onsite logistics of domestic and international meetings, have strong background in vendor management and RFP process, possess strong written and verbal skills, and be able to work with all levels throughout an organization.
