Working in partnership with the global science and health communities, Elsevier's 7,000 employees in over 70 offices worldwide publish more than 2,000 journals and 1,900 new books per year, in addition to offering a suite of innovative electronic products, such as ScienceDirect, MD Consult, Scopus, bibliographic databases, and online reference works.Responsibilities Senior Financial Analyst (SFA) will support Nursing & Health Professions (NHP) Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Finance Business Controller (FBC) in providing financial guidance and support to SBU to assist it in achieving outstanding financial and operational performance, growing top and bottom line, making value-added investments, and enhancing shareholder value for eAcademic electronic solutions component of business. SFA will be business partner with FBC and with SBU Vice Presidents and Team in managing and profitably growing business and will ensure SBU understands its financial performance, is capturing and reporting correct financial information, and is effectively managing all of its financial resources. Main Activities and Responsibilities include: 1) getting immersed in the planning and running of the business to ensure there is a proper understanding of the basis of cost and the key drivers of financial performance; 2) preparing, executing, managing, and reporting on annual operating plan for profit and loss items such as revenue, direct costs, gross profit/margin, indirect costs, and operating profit/margin; balance sheet items such as pre-publication costs, accounts receivable, accounts payable, tangible and intangible assets, and capitalized research and development costs; and cash flow items such as working capital movements, operating cash flow, and operating cash flow conversion as well as three annual, formal re-forecasts of these items; 3) being able to translate eAcademic electronic solutions performance into NHP Education Books performance in terms of subordinate sub-categories, projects, and acquisitions as well as understanding how SBU performance impacts NHP Education performance. Being able to translate financial data into actionable information to be able to have a positive impact on the top and bottom line. Being able to correlate operational activity to financial results and use it to accurately predict the future and to positively impact operational performance; 4) participating in business, strategic, and tactical planning to ensure health and growth of business in short, intermediate, and long run, including participating in some or all of the following: pricing and proposal meetings, strategy meetings and portfolio analysis, post-acquisition acquisition model reviews, investment business case reviews, development spend reviews, etc.; 5) developing, implementing, and managing value-added financial processes and effective financial controls system, including compliance with all Elsevier accounting policies and procedures and strict adherence to all Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. Ensuring financial reports are accurate, timely, and consistent with Elsevier accounting policies, GAAP, and IFRS.Qualifications Undergraduate degree in finance or related field. MBA or CMA is plus Seven plus years finance, financial planning, and/or operational (P&L) finance experience, with emphasis on budgeting, forecasting, analyzing, controlling, and reporting. Accounting exposure is plus. Must be intermediate or expert level Excel and PowerPoint user. Hyperion, Oracle, Excel Link, and Access is highly desired or ability to quickly learn new systems/tools. Must have good understanding of GAAP, IFRS, and Sarbanes Oxley requirements. International experience and foreign exchange exposure is plus. Must like challenges and be able to excel in high pressure, demanding, and dynamic environment Must be tough-minded and ethically sound SFA that can carry convictions through and prevail in leading the fiscal direction of the business Must be persuasive, have good people skills, be able to motivate and provide leadership to diverse groups and be able to work across boundaries -- organizational, geographical, functional, etc. to solve problems and achieve results Must be a quick study, have excellent business acumen, and be able to react quickly and effectively to changing circumstances Must be self-starting, hands-on, roll-up-the-sleeves SFA with strong analytical and problem solving skills who can work with people at all levels.
