Storage Manager

The New York Times Company has an immediate need for a Storage Manager who will be responsible for the enterprise storage and data back up environment.  This environment contains: EMC SAN and NAS, IBM enterprise storage, Recovery Point,  Server Graph, EMC’s ECC, IBM TMS and Legatto Networker, Veritas file systems.  Server OSs include MS Win2000//20003, NetWare, Active Directory, Netware Directory Services, Altiris, Opsware, Novell iPrint, Lotus Notes, SAP, MS SQL, Oracle, as well as typical office and business applications.

 

The position is located in our Boston office at The Boston Globe.

 

As our applications are available 24 x 7 x 365, this position will manage a team with occasional off-hour support is necessary. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This process oriented, hands-on individual will be manage our Enterprise Services Storage Administration group. The position manages a second level support team responsible for implementing, monitoring and supporting our storage and data infrastructure.  Key tasks include:

 

Staff Management:Communicate effectively to all levels of technical and non-technical staff members to foster a cooperative, process driven, team based approachOngoing management, prioritization and escalation of service issues based on production needs, service call criticality and department functional needs. Developing and documenting day-to-day operational and technical plans, policies, procedures in support of the operational environmentCreate strategic and tactical plans that insure the long-term viability of the Enterprise Services Storage Admin group. Administrating and maintaining IT service flows including collecting and reporting of required metrics, statistics and work progress.

 

Technical LeadershipInsure the highest levels of availability, resiliency, and user satisfaction.  This includes managing the incident resolution and postmortem process.Provide technical direction and an escalation point for the team members.  Identifying areas or processes to increase server reliability and streamline tasks. Leveraging remote management toolsMaintain and increase technical knowledge with regard to the clients standardsEnsure the preparedness of our BCP environment.

 

Project ManagementManage people and resources to achieve department objectives. This includes reporting project status. Demonstrated knowledge of formal project management methodologyResolving issues related to project / task execution.Working with various Systems groups, establishing and evolving procedures for deployment initiatives and technology refreshes. Participating in company wide data gathering and analysis to support technology implementation

 



WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:A minimum of five years experience managing a technical support staff of ten or more persons and projects that are geographically dispersed.A minimum of five years of hands-on technical experience relevant technology.The candidate must have hands-on experience (and current technical knowledge) in Windows Systems Administration, and SAN.  Unix experience is desired.Previous experience managing / supporting a 24 x 7 server environment at a large (500+ server) firmMinimum 3 years experience with zoning, lun creation, and working with SAN tools.Demonstrated experience configuring and administering EMC SANC Windows 2000/2003 servers, Solaris server in a large multi location environment. Strong knowledge of enterprise storage (NAS and SANs), specifically EMC, IBM and Cisco switches.Strong knowledge of TSM and Legato backup software.
