Known as the "grandfather of specialty coffee," Peet's Coffee & Tea has been a Berkeley institution since opening its doors more than forty years ago. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Peet's Coffee & Tea was a pioneer among other food purveyors in Berkeley's "gourmet ghetto" - a collection of European style shops and restaurants. The roasting facility is in Alameda, just a few miles from the original location on Vine Street in Berkeley, which still attracts a large, loyal following, including many who are proud that they have been customers since the store opened in 1966.

OVERALL FUNCTION:
Reporting to the accounting operations manager, the cost accounting manager is responsible for developing and maintaining accurate cost records using bill of materials, reconciling inventory, generating weekly and monthly variance analysis reports and advising on inventory issues. In addition, the cost accountant will be actively involved in the process review and recommendations to transition to a new fully integrated ERP system and the development of a cost accounting system.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide finance and plant management with analysis of inventory usage and ultimately manufacturing cost variances.
Work with plant operations and information systems to develop optimal flow of inventory data to facilitate transition to a new ERP system.
Assist with establishing, implementing and documenting new policies and procedures related to inventory and cost accounting.
While implementing a bill of materials system, create and prepare weekly internal reports to analyze data including scrap and yields, refine BOM assumptions and develop process recommendations.
Establish labor and overhead rates for use in BOM and otherwise calculate and record capitalization of applicable overhead into inventory.
Assist plant operations in maintaining proper inventory controls.
Perform month-end accounting activities, including reviewing and analyzing all inventory related entries to the ledger and financial statements to provide accurate inventory valuation and reporting.
Perform special projects under the direction of the accounting operations manager.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Accounting, business or finance degree
Minimum of 5 years progressive accounting experience including a minimum of 2 years in cost accounting
Solid knowledge of accounting principles and cost accounting practices
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
Proficient with flowcharting and diagram processes
Experience with ERP systems
CPA or CPA candidate preferred
