Title: Designer - Women's Print & Artwork, Urban Outfitters

Reports to: Senior Designer Art & Color, Design Manager

Oversees: Design Assistant/Assistant Designer

Objective: To contribute to the overall trend and direction for designs each season for the print, color and artwork category. To ensure that designs and resulting product are appropriate for the Urban Outfitters customer.

Job Skills:

The ability to recognize and accurately forecast fashion and cultural trends in relation to print, art and color.

Creative Vision: Have the vision to identify print and artwork trends in their early stages and understand their impact to fashion, so we can be one step ahead for the aspirational customer. Have the expertise to take aspirational ideas, focusing on the key details and make them work for a broader audience. Have creative ideas that give Urban a point of difference in the market without being too obscure.

Ability to articulate ideas clearly and inspire: Excellent communication skills to communicate ideas and inspirations to others and to interact with designers, buyers and other Home Office staff.

Ability to research and report on industry print and art related trend direction, color direction, and technique innovations approximately 9-12 months ahead of season.

Organizational skills necessary to manage: multiple tasks and projects, and complete them within deadlines.

Excellent hand sketching and/or CAD skill in Illustrator and Photoshop.

Comprehensive knowledge of construction and all creative techniques in relation to silk screening, embroidery, flock, foil, embellishment and washing, dying treatments.

Knowledge and ability to CAD up print repeats as final artwork, edit, recolor and match color from the seasonal palette.

Have a keen ability to develop and test new ideas and treatment and keep up with new technology in the print industry. Meet with print vendors, match colors to the printer for seasonal palette when needed.

The ability to develop partnerships with Buyers, Directors and Department heads.

Ability to provide leadership to employees and peers and, foster an environment of continual training and development.

Responsibilities:

Contribute to overall print and artwork trend and direction for each season, for all designs, labels and categories.

Shop and observe street fashion several times a year. Take photos and purchase samples for print, artwork and embellishment inspiration.

Collaborate with the Senior Designer, Design Manager and Design Director each season to develop conceptual direction for the total print and artwork assortment.

Research, develop and present own print ideas.

Style patterns into dynamic layouts, re-color prints, create repeats and rework vintage or bought original artwork into cool fashion prints for the Urban Outfitters customer.

Present artwork samples and color ideas for merchant review at Proto and Finalization Meetings.

Develop a partnership with Design Coordinators to ensure artwork deadlines are met.

Manage, train and develop Design Assistant/Assistant Designer.

Education Requirement:

Bachelors Degree in Fine Art and or Graphic

Design Experience Requirement:

* 3-5+ years working in fashion designing, styling and reworking prints and patterns

* Experience developing original textile prints

* Excellent hand sketching and/or CAD skills in Illustrator and/or Photoshop

Comments: May require some domestic and overseas travel.
