Title: Product Design Engineer
Department: Sensors and Controls Group
I. Position Description
This is an exciting opportunity to join a cross-functional team of product engineering, technical marketing, and manufacturing personnel to develop new products for a rapidly expanding market. In this position you will gain exposure to all phases of the product development process from cradle to grave. Specifically you will conceptualize, design, develop, analyze, verify, and improve the technology, components, and assemblies used in environmental monitoring sensors and controls.
II. Key Responsibilities
A. Provide product, component, and assembly designs for the development and support of sensor and control product line.
B. Develop designs which meet customer, safety, regulatory, quality, manufacturing, and cost requirements while providing a sustainable differentiation in the marketplace.
C. Verify and validate designs through the use of engineering calculations, simulations, and predictive tools, as well as through lab testing and field testing.
D. Use structured problem solving methodologies to identify root causes and effective corrective actions.
E. Create solid models and layout drawings including appropriate geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) for the development of designs.
F. Interface and collaborate with colleagues within own workgroup and within other departments to ensure that designs meet all requirements.
III. Relationships
A. Report directly to the Manager or Product Development in the Sensors and Controls Group
B. Work within a cross-functional team of design engineers, designers, lab technicians, product managers, project managers, and various manufacturing personnel – working on new product development and product improvement projects.
C. Collaborate with suppliers, partners, and other work teams to leverage their expertise and core competencies to achieve project deliverables.
IV. Measures of Performance
A. Product Requirements; as measured by degree of alignment between resulting product designs and product requirements specifications.
B. Product Quality; as measured by successful product verification and validation testing.
C. On-Time performance; as measured by lack of delays on key deliverables as defined in the project plan.
D. Product margins; as measured by ability of designs to meet product cost targets.
V. Background and Skill
A. 5-10 years experience in product development focused in sensor and control technologies.
B. Masters in Mechanical Engineering or Physics.
C. Ability to utilize computer aided design software, such as Pro/Engineer and AutoCAD, to generate concept and system layouts.
D. Working knowledge of engineering analysis and simulation tools to predict performance, tolerance studies, and design margins.
E. Statistical and predictive experience with tools such as DOE, DFSS, FMEA
F. Strong oral, written, and graphical communication skills
G. Strong academic background in mechanical engineering fundamentals and experience with electro-magnetic technologies, applied chemistry, physics, or optical sensors are desired.
H. Working knowledge of mechanical lab instrumentation, experimentation methods, and data acquisition techniques.
