Field Engineer - Oak Brook, IL

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility will be the screening and distribution of cable locates for protection of the OSP Cable System. This individual must have experience and proficiency with locating underground Cable Plant and Local One Call Laws. Performs the day-to-day operational functions associated with regional operations of the AboveNet. Individual will share in the rotation of after hours Emergency On Call response schedule. Responsible for receiving, logging, reviewing and responding to Utility Requests for Information (RFI’s). Individual will work with local management to administer preliminary assignments of conflicting projects by third parties. Responsible for hardware maintenance, site maintenance, cable locates and new location surveys for AboveNet regional operations activities.

Responsibilities:

A. Pre-operational

•Responsible for screening cable locate tickets and dispatching to area field engineers. Perform positive response of locate tickets to requesting parties. Perform daily audits of received locate tickets and reconcile deficiencies;

•Log, review and respond to Third Party Utility Requests for Information;

•Assist the AboveNet Engineering Department with network construction activities and required Fiber Engineering paperwork including but not limited to: Route forms, Splice Engineering packages, Red Lines and As Builts; •Perform cable locates and protect AboveNet’s cable plant. Participate in local On Call schedule rotation;

•Provide preliminary site surveys for building entrance construction requirements and equipment space availability;

•Responsible for installation and testing of fiber optic patch cords.

B. Post Operational

•Operations liaison to third parties for daytime Emergency cable locates;

•Monitor inventory levels and update as required. Prepare purchase requisitions to replenish Operations materials as needed;

•Responsible for problem life cycle management (isolation, tracking, and resolution);

•Responsible for site preventive maintenance practices;

•Monitor contractor, vendor and customer co-location requirements;

•Provide daily status reports to Operations Manager;

•The individual must comply with departmental and corporate internal controls and all internal controls processes;

•The individual must possess and employ the highest ethical and business standards and always conduct himself/herself with the greatest degree of professional integrity;

•Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements:

Proficient with MS Outlook, MapPoint 2004, as built reading and construction plan reading. Background in the Operations and Maintenance of transmission networks. Familiarity with the following desired: underground and aerial fiber optic cable networks, Lucent LGX fiber distribution and test system, Nortel Sonet, WDM and DWDM transmission equipment, transmission network alarm and surveillance systems, Generators, AC and DC power plants, OTDR and Power Meter test equipment, and fusion splice machines.

Military or technical training in associated discipline or equivalent experience. Minimum of two (2) years training or experience in the operation of transmission networks. Knowledge in technical disciplines as associated with operations in the inside and outside plant environment. Experience with fiber optic cable testing, splicing or provisioning.
