This position requires both management and individual contributor roles for product development engineering activities and responsibilities in a geographically distributed engineering organization. These activities will include: proposal development and management, program management, project management, systems/software/hardware engineering and leadership of other engineering resources. This position will function as part of a core team of experienced individuals that will form the basis of the Tampa Office. Some of the key responsibilities will include:[1] Business Area Growth: Candidates must have an interest in participating in business area growth, including development of strategy, managing profit and loss, customer interfacing, product evolution, and other aspects of operating an engineering oriented business. Candidates must have a previous history of strong, successful technical performance developing complex products and systems. Information assurance experience is a strong plus.[2] Team Building: Tampa is a new location for ViaSat. We are looking for candidates with the attributes and skills to establish and build a new engineering team including: strong personal ownership, the ability to understand ViaSat’s culture and replicate our values with a new team, the ability to assess talent and build a balanced team that provides a strong foundation for future growth, and the experience and desire to mentor others. [3] Program Execution: The ideal candidate has a broad array of proven program skills. Candidates must be capable of performing and/or guiding a team through the development process, from mapping high level networking and security requirements into a system architecture and producing flowed-down requirements documents, to creating designs and design documentation, to implementation and testing and validation. Experience with system verification testing is highly desired. Management skills such as the ability to create cost and schedule estimates and actively participate in contract negotiations are desired. Candidates must be able to lead a development effort through design and verification stages while maintaining schedule and cost constraints. Familiarity with earned value management is a plus. Candidates will likely be the primary customer interface throughout development for programmatic and technical issues. Candidates must be comfortable and experienced with all aspects of program execution, and be able to teach what they know to others.Experience/Skills Required Minimum 15 years experience in relevant engineering discipline, 20+ years preferred. Recent 5+ years experience in Information Assurance including certification of Type 1 systems. Working knowledge of Gov't/DoD program acquisition environment. Experience leading a development team in both a technical as well as administrative level. Able to look beyond program assignments and support development of the team working in Tampa. Able to make technical decisions. Able to develop, track, and maintain develop schedules. Able to develop cost estimates and report progress to management.
