Process Engineer

 Silgan seeks a process engineer for its Langhorne PA plant ideally with 3-5 years SIPA machine experience or 3-5 years injection blow molding process engineering skills. Responsibilities  Able to effectively communicate with plant process setup technicians and equipment operators to resolve issues either by phone or traveling to the operating plantØ  Capable of assisting Product Development Engineers by applying plastics processing knowledge and experience to evaluate new products and make design recommendations to improve process capability on production equipmentØ  Able to work safely in an environment with industrial equipmentØ  Understand the safe operation of the pilot plant or production injection, blow molding, and stretch blow molding equipment and support equipmentØ  Demonstrate the ability to operate the above equipment in a safe manner consistent with manufacturers operating guidelines.Ø  The ability to safely perform machine setups to achieve job changes as required achieving the pilot lab schedule, support manufacturing operations, or NPD projectsØ  Ability to read and understand product part drawings (bottle, perform, closure, etc…) and specifications to understand what features are critical part function and performance.Ø  Demonstrate advanced understanding of plastic materials and processing requirementsØ  Ability to develop procedures to document whether process tests are a success or failure.  Document the criteria for success prior to beginning process run.Ø  Able to provide independent recommendations for product design or process changes to improve product or process based on process lab evaluations or process evaluationsØ  Able to use  MS Windows based programs (primarily MS Word,Excel, and MS Project) to document results of process evaluations Ø  Ability to determine when a process is in control after process adjustments are made prior to taking retained samples for evaluations. Ability to understand basic statistical concepts.Ø  Ability to use test equipment for basic bottle measurements scales, calipers, optical comparator, magna mike, top load tester, etc…Ø  Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of pilot or production injection, blow molding, and stretch blow molding equipment and support equipment when break downs occur. Address minor problems and contact service support for major issues.Ø  Able to travel to other Silgan Plastics sites, suppliers, and customer facilities if necessary to support projects Prior Work Experience: If not degreed in plastics engineering or other pertinent technical degree, prior technical/mechanical work environment should include a minimum of 3-5 years hands on plastics processing experience -machine operation and setup or hands on maintenance --mechanical, electrical, or hydraulics, or plastics mold design and development. Attributes:  Dependable, safety minded, analytical, creative, detail-oriented, works well independently, capable of clearly expressing thoughts and ideas to others, enjoy a position with high travel requirements Skills:Good with numbers, good analytical problem solving skills, well organized, good written and verbal communication skills, able to set priorities and manage multiple projects, work well under pressure and still achieve deadlines without sacrificing quality of work.  Job Functions: · Operating Production machinery and downstream equipment.· Develop process capability experiments to resolve specific process issues.· Perform Production machinery job changes and process set up· Complete production plant service requests or CIP projects to resolve operations issues:o Verify Process Set upo Verify that the correct materials are being used and are properly preparedo Verify that equipment is functioning within appropriate operating conditionso Start up process on production machine and evaluate parts to determine if meets targets§ If yes, document process, observations, and recommendations in service report§ If no, work with Operations Process technician to determine how to meet targets, document parameters for multiple process runs, document results, capture the information in service report.§ Document requirements or plans to resolve the issue§ Work with operations to execute recommendationso Monitor the production quality of samples produced during process evaluations and sample runso Use data (statistical methods) to determine the best process or quantify improvements· Support PDE on new product startupso Either using pilot lab data (if available) or target process parameters develop process for new productso Determine the optimum process to meet product performance requirements§ Document parameters used in multiple process runs§ Document results based on container evaluations§ Capture the information in process evaluation report.§ Document process window – key process variableso Communicate and document recommendations for product improvement· Monitor the production quality of samples produced during process evaluations and sample runs Use test equipment for basic bottle measurements scales, calipers, optical comparator, magna mike, top load tester, etc…to know quality level of parts being produced· Maintain area housekeeping  and keep work area organized· Disposal/grinding of used materials/bottles.· Other duties as assigned.
